TCJFF Presents: The Stamp Thief
Opis wydarzenia
Programmer's Pick! The Stamp Thief speaks directly to my fascination with genealogy, family history, and the vibrant tapestry of Jewish life in pre-war Poland. Through a mix of sharp insight and biting irony, the film unravels the messy perils and bureaucratic foibles of post-Holocaust property restitution. While it mirrors facets of my own journey, the story is universal—a poignant, bittersweet reflection that will resonate deeply with anyone tracing roots back to Eastern Europe. - Walter Elias, TCJFF Film Screener Part heist film and part historical investigation, THE STAMP THIEF follows screenwriter Gary Gilbert on an audacious quest to recover a cache of stamps allegedly stolen by a Nazi officer from a concentration camp and hidden for decades in a basement in Legnica, Poland. With director Dan Sturman, Gilbert assembles a crew and gains access by posing as a production team shooting a feature film. What begins as a wildly entertaining caper becomes a morally tangled reckoning with an 80-year-old theft, the ethics of deception in pursuit of justice, and the lingering mistrust between Poles and Jews. THE STAMP THIEF asks what we owe the past, and how far we are willing to go to reclaim it. Presented in partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.
