Film Screening - Edinburgh - The Queen and the Smokehouse / Bałtyk, dir. Iga Lis
Opis wydarzenia
The Queen and the Smokehouse" dir. Iga Lis arrives in Scotland as one of the most talked‑about Polish documentaries of the past year and we are proud to present it first in the UK. Iga Lis’s debut opened the 65th Krakow Film Festival. The Queen and the Smokehouse/ Bałtyk, dir. Iga Lis, Polska 2025, 72 min. Rating: 15+ UK/Scottish premiere For anyone who grew up in Poland, the Baltic coast is something else entirely: the shock of cold water, the scramble to claim a patch of sand, kilometres of white beaches dotted with paravans, the plastic toys, the fashion show unfolding between windbreaks, the rooms rented out by locals, and the unmistakable holiday trio of ice cream, chips and fried fish. And always, somewhere in the background, the quiet terror of jellyfish drifting just close enough to keep you alert. At the centre of this world stands Miecia - the unstoppable Queen of Łeba - a woman whose smokehouse fed generations, shaped a town, and became part of collective memory. Her kingdom was built on humour, discipline and forty years of work that held a community together. The film reflects on disappearing traditions, the fragility of places created by strong, offbeat women, and the resilience required to keep such spaces alive. It is an unconventional portrait of the seaside - one that looks past the postcard image and into the vanishing era. Celebrated across Poland, The Queen and the Smokehouse has already received an ORŁY Polish Film Awards nomination for Discovery of the Year, the Jantar Award for Best Cinematography at Młodzi i Film, and the Audience Award at Sopot Film Festival’s DOK.PL Competition. The film was created as part of Munk Studio’s “First Documentary” programme. The UK and Scottish premiere is accompanied by a curated selection of short films presented with Scottish Documentary Institute, including Community Theatre by L. Baillie, nominated for this year’s BAFTA Awards. Together, the programme forms a conversation about place, identity and the understated poetry of everyday labour. 15 November, Sunday 7 PM Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Edinburgh 19 November, Thursday 6:45 PM The Pyramid at Anderston, Glasgow With pre‑recorded introduction by Karolina Kosińska Presented by Borscht Film with Scottish Documentary Institute.
