Join us for a book club presentation with Vasyl Makhno and his new book, The Angel and the Donkey. With Poems about Fire and Water («Ангел і осел. З віршами про вогонь і воду»), featuring a conversation with the author alongside his translator, Jaroslaw Anders, followed by an audience Q&A. A richly layered story of journeys, memory and creativity, the novel opens personal experiences with history, connecting places such as Buchach and Jerusalem. At the center of the novel is writer Viktor Preisner, who lives on the quiet, picturesque outskirts of Riverhead. For years, he has been working on a novel set in Gospel times—a work he hopes will define his literary legacy. On his desk stand two figurines he once bought in Jerusalem: an angel and a donkey. After a devastating storm, he will find them among the ruins of his home. But what will become of his manuscript? Copies of the featured novel in Ukrainian will be available for purchase and signing by the author before the discussion begins. Other books by the author will also be available for purchase in English.
